\nAbstract introductory keynote:<\/span>
\nEngineering sustainability \u2013 the need for eco-efficiency and eco-effectiveness<\/em>
\nA sustainable society needs eco-efficient technological solutions but how should we measure and benchmark eco-efficiency and how far can it take us on the route to a sustainable society? The presentation gives an introduction to the eco-efficiency understood as the ratio between the provided functionality and its associated environmental impact. Environmental life cycle assessment (LCA) methodology lends itself very well to a quantification of eco-efficiency with its concomitant focus on functionality (the service provided by the system) and environmental impact. The latest developments in LCA methodology are presented, the central strengths and weaknesses of the tool are highlighted, and its ability to support assessment and development of more eco-efficient solutions is discussed. During the last decade, life cycle assessment has enjoyed a strong proliferation among industries and authorities, including the EU Commission, as the tool used to quantify the eco-efficiency of products or systems in support of decisions towards a more sustainable consumption and production. But will the focus on increased eco-efficiency help us ensure a sustainable world or will it take us somewhere else? Limitations of a green growth strategy focusing solely on increasing eco-efficiency are shown at the level of the individual consumer, the industry and society as a whole, and conflicts between eco-efficiency and eco-effectiveness in support of environmental sustainability are presented and discussed.<\/p>\n


\nMichael Hauschild<\/em>\u00a0is professor and Head of the division for Quantitative Sustainability Assessment at the Department of Management Engineering at Technical University of Denmark. He has been engaged in the development of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodology and LCA application for two decades and served as consultant to the European Commission on the topic. He has headed several working groups under the United Nation Environment Program (UNEP) and Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry (SETAC) Life Cycle Initiative and was centrally involved in the development of the USEtox\u2122 model for assessment of toxic impacts in LCA. He has been a member of the Editorial Board of The International Journal of Life Cycle Assessment since 1998 and subject editor on LCA for the Journal of Industrial Ecology since 2010. \u00a0Michael is initiator and founding Chair of the Nordic Life Cycle Association (NorLCA) aimed at dissemination of life cycle thinking in the Nordic countries. He was co-receiver of the Nordic Council Nature and Environmental Prize in 1997 awarded for the methodology development in environmental product assessment and environmental design.<\/p>\n
